St. Gertrude was born on January 6, 1256 in Eisleben, Thuringia. She entered Benedictine monastery school at age of four.
She joined the cloistered community in 1266. Her writing illustrates that she was knowledgeable in rhetoric, and her Latin is very articulate.
She encountered the first of a sequence of apparitions at age of 25 that continued all over her life, and which changed the journey of her life. Gertrude strongly committed to personal prayer and meditation, and initiated writing spiritual disquisition for the advantage of her monastic sisters.
Gertrude was considered one of the notable mystics of the 13th century. She died around 1302 at Helfta, near Eisleben, Saxony.
The Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great for the Souls in Purgatory
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen.
